How to pick the right bowl

Match these to your bong and it'll fit first time:

Joint size

14mm the most common. 18mm on larger bongs. Measure or check your old bowl if unsure.

Gender

A male bowl (slide) drops into a female joint — that is most bongs. If your joint sticks out, you need a female bowl.

Screen

Some bowls have a built-in glass screen or honeycomb to stop pull-through; otherwise add a small screen.

Style

From plain workhorse slides to hand-decorated art bowls — function is the same, the look is up to you.

Bowl size and how it changes the session

Joint size gets the fit right; bowl volume decides how the piece actually smokes:

Small bowls

A shallow bowl holds roughly 0.1-0.2g - one or two hits. Best for solo sessions where the material stays fresh rather than sitting lit between pulls.

Deep bowls

0.3g+ suits rotations. The trade-off is that the lower half tends to sit partly combusted while the rotation comes back around.

Glass screens vs mesh

A built-in glass screen resists clogging and never needs replacing. Drop-in steel mesh is cheaper and easier to swap, but scorches over time.

Handle or knob

Worth more than it sounds - a bowl gets genuinely hot. A glass knob or horn lets you clear it mid-session without reaching for the rim.

When to replace a bowl

Bowls are consumables. Three signs it is time:

Airflow drops

If the hole stays restricted after an isopropyl soak, resin has hardened in the joint itself and the piece is past cleaning.

Chips at the joint

A chipped ground joint will never seal properly again - you lose suction and the bowl can drop. Replace rather than tape it.

Permanent staining

Cosmetic rather than functional, but deeply baked-in resin also holds stale flavour that carries into every bowl after it.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my bong takes a 14mm or 18mm bowl?

Measure the inner diameter of the joint, or compare your current bowl. 14mm is by far the most common; bigger bongs often use 18mm.

What does male and female mean for bowls?

A male bowl slides into a female joint (most bongs). If your bong's joint is the part that sticks out, it's male and you need a female bowl.

Will any 14mm bowl fit any 14mm bong?

Yes, as long as the gender matches. A 14mm male slide fits any 14mm female joint regardless of brand.

Do I need a screen in my bowl?

Only if material pulls through. Many bowls have a built-in glass screen; if yours does not, a small steel or glass screen fixes it.

Can I use an 18mm bowl on a 14mm bong?

Not directly — you'd need a 14mm-to-18mm adapter. It's easier to buy the bowl in your bong's size.

How deep should a bong bowl be?

For solo use a shallow bowl holding 0.1-0.2g keeps material fresh and avoids half-burnt leftovers. For shared sessions a 0.3g+ deep bowl means fewer reloads, at the cost of some material sitting lit between passes.

Do I need a screen in my bong bowl?

Only if material is pulling through into the water. Bowls with a built-in glass screen never need one; plain-hole bowls benefit from a steel or glass screen, particularly with finely ground herb.

How often should I clean a bowl?

Rinse in isopropyl every week or two with regular use. Resin hardens as it ages, and a bowl left un-soaked for months often cannot be fully recovered.

Can I use a 14mm bowl on an 18mm bong?

Not directly - but a 14mm-to-18mm adapter solves it. See our glass adapters if you have pieces in both sizes.
